The Center for the Study of Adolescence was part of the AHAIC (Africa Health Agenda International Conference 2017) Preconference held on the 5th and 6th March 2017 and the main conference held from 7th to 9th March 2017 at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Upperhill, Nairobi. It was officially opened on Sunday the 7th morning by the First Lady of the Republic of Kenya Her Excellence Margaret Kenyatta and The First Lady of the Republic of Malawi Dr. Getrude Mutharika.

The theme of the Conference was: TOWARDS A HEALTHIER AFRICA, PEOPLE, SYSTEMS & INNOVATIONS

In her speech during the official opening of the conference, Her Excellence Margaret Kenyatta said that young people are our present and the future. She mentioned the importance of youth-led, youth-centered interventions and the need for Youth Friendly Services that meets needs of young people.

The First Lady of Malawi and president of the Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDs (OAFLA) Dr. Getrude Mutharika said that there is nothing for the youth without the youth. In addition, she said OAFLA has resolved to prioritize and tackle issues affecting young people.

Young Shiluni Shirim’s (The Amref Health Africa Anti-FGM ambassador) said “We can still aim high and achieve our dreams even without the cut”

A team of young people were charged with the task of collecting and formulating messages from all young people present during the Youth Preconference and at the end of the second day had come up with a communique which was presented during the main conference.
